| Press Release | The price of electricity, natural gas and heating oil seems to keep going up, sometimes faster than our income. What can we do about it? We can insulate and seal the house, ventilate the unconditioned spaces, reduce consumption and install energy-saving appliances and controls. Here are our top tips and projects for reducing your utility bills.
Working with contractors is a great way to get home repairs and improvements done professionally and effectively. If you thinking about having some work done, here are some articles with tips and information to help you understand and manage the project.
If your toilet sometimes starts filling by itself, that can become expensive as well as annoying. To learn what you need to do to get it to stay filled... Check your flow valve and floper inside, they might need to be replaced.
If your water supply pipes make a rapid hammering noise when the water is turned off, the problem may be that the hammer risers in your system are not working properly. Possibly, not enough were installed. In that case you'll have to add new risers in the right places to fix the problem. But it is more likely that the risers have lost their air. Restoring the air can be a do-it-yourself fix, and should always be tried as a first step.
GFCI - Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter - receptacles and breakers should be tested once a month to insure that they are operating properly. You can do this by bushing the TEST button on the device or by using a GFCI plug tester. Make sure the device tripped off and then reset it, either by pushing the RESET button or by turning the breaker OFF and then back ON.
Replacing a single-pole switch should be a straightforward process. Usually, it is. Sometimes, though, you may encounter something that seems unusual. These tips should help you get through the project regardless. This article is about replacing a standard single-pole switch, controlling some lights, or a receptacle, or a furnace blower, which draws 110 - 120 volts. If the switch you need to replace has exactly two wires connected to two termination screws, or three wires connected to three screws if it is grounded, this information should be useful. If the switch has three or more wires attached to it in addition to a ground wire, it may not be a single-pole switch.
If you've got a clogged sink or lavatory drain, try this recipe for opening up the clog: Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda and 1/2 cup of salt into the drain Pour 1/2 cup of vinegar over that mixture Wait about 15 minutes to let the mixture work through the clog. Once the drain is open, run very hot water through the drain. If the clog is still not gone, then it's time to try a plunger or a plumber's snake. If that doesn't work, you may need to clean the main pipe and trap.
Does your water bill indicate that your water use is higher than you think it really is? Maybe you have a water leak somewhere in the system. Because the leak isn't in an obvious place, it may very well be behind a wall. If it is, you'll need to call a plumber to help identify the location and, most likely, to fix it. But first, you can discover whether you even have a leak. Here are two methods to help you with this diagnosis. First thing, you'll want to turn off all the appliances in the house that use water -- including dishwasher, icemaker, water heater. It can be a challenge in a modern house to find all the water-using appliances! Turn off all the faucets while you're moving around the house.
To help maintain water flow through the disposal, always turn the water on before you start the disposal and turn it off after the unit has stopped. To really get things flowing and help maintain your icemaker, start the disposal and feed it the old cubes sitting in the icemaker's bucket. To improve both odor control and water flow, feed all those leftover lemon or lime peels (from your iced tea, lemonade stand, or Corona-and-slammers party) into it -- fresh citrus is not as good, because it's the rinds that do the work.

The O.S.H.A. Standards require persons working from a boom lift to use a full-body harness and lanyard system for fall protection. Approximately 85 people die and an additional 100,000 are injured annually from lift related incidents. O.S.H.A. has determined that at least 25% of these injuries can be prevented with proper training. This training includes a pre-start inspection; possibly the single most important safety procedure. Training should also cover the proper operating procedure, traveling in the lift and load capacity of the lift. The maximum capacity is a function of the boom extension and angle and must never be exceeded. Electrical hazards should be identified and required distances kept from the hazard.

Over 9 million construction workers build and maintain roads, houses, workplaces and physical infrastructure. This work includes many inherently hazardous tasks and conditions such as work at height, excavations, noise, dust, power tools and equipment, confined spaces, and electricity. Construction has about 6% of U.S. workers, but 20% of the fatalities - the largest number of fatalities reported for any of the industry sectors. Construction is one of the eight sectors that NIOSH is targeting via the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA). NIOSH researchers identify causes of and develop programs to prevent injuries and fatalities in construction. | Construction is a high hazard occupation. During the period from 1980 through 1995, at least 17,000 construction workers died from injuries suffered on the job. Construction lost more workers to traumatic injury death than any other major industrial sector during this time period. Construction has the third highest rate of death by injury: 15.2 deaths per 100,000 workers. Only mining and agriculture experience higher rates. The leading causes of death among construction workers are falls from elevations, motor vehicle crashes, electrocution, machines, and struck by falling objects.
